HAND JOB

A catalog of type. by Michael Perry

this book wasn't really what i was expecting. i thought it would be a typeface a page, a-z and 1-9 , instead they are full of words, lettering, scribbles and colour. much more fun than i had anticipated. it collates all kind of hand drawn typefaces, some photographed in context, others doodled on the page. the range is fantastic. i will definitely take inspiration from the designs, i wouldnt say were all usable (like some of the graffiti designs) but were great to study anyway.
all typefaces started as a hand drawn idea, this book is an interesting and inspiring reference for designing new ones, and reworking traditional ones.
my favorite typeface designer featured is Curtis Flanagan

'ribbon' typeface.

TOILET PAPER TYPE

this image found on www.typeworkshop.com is another example of creating typography from alternative materials. the execution of this type is good, with the setting, the layout of the letters and the double thickness of the characters adding to the effect. on researching this i also found a few interesting images..
same concept, but a simplified execution in a series of advertising images by Target.
found image displaying the feeling of cheap toilet paper.

DAVE WOOD

Bull dog clip typeface.

subverting the purpose of an every day object and seeing its potential as an art form. it just shows what thinking past the function of an item, and seeing it as shapes rather than boring office stationery can do.

CHRISSIE ABBOTT

i found this images whilst browsing Chrissie's website (www.chrissieabbott.co.uk). it shows a typeface which was inspired by the smoking ban of july last year.

i found this interesting. do culture and politics influence design as much as design can influence culture and politics?

this typeface looks really quite fun, when smoking and the ban is far from fun for most people, and the health implications of smoking are seriously un-fun.

still, used in the right context this would be really effective.

POP ART - ART POP

this idea comes originates from a Mentos advert

it is simply trays of bubble wrapped packets of mentos, with some of the mints popped out.

a brilliantly simple idea by Cossette, using the product and its packaging in a fresh way to create the advertising campaign. i dont particulary like the advert itself, but the idea behind it is very impressive.

DAMIEN CORRELL

i admire Damien Correll's arty approach to this. it seems as if its been fun to produce, which is always good. I'm not sure how well it would read, but in a way, that doesn't really matter. i like having to work out which letters which, as it is obviously not intended to be your average typeface. used in the most suitable context, this could look really impressive.

BJORK VOLTA

this is the typeface used throughout bjorks latest album. bjork's promo is almost always custom constructed, often by M/M Paris. used for the odd word, and knowing what that word should say, (i.e. volta) it is readable. otherwise, its all a little confusing. bjork is known for pushing boundaries. this typeface for the volta album is no exception.
